Couples Retreat

couplesretreat

This comedic romantic movie takes four couples to an exotic island were they work on saving their relationships. If you’re a fan of “Swingers” you’re be glad to hear that Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau have teamed up for some memorable dialogue. Couples Retreat is fun to watch but not the side stitching comedy you’d expect from a cast of notables.

Zombieland

zombieland

It’s been quite a while since I did a movie review, but after this weekend and watching Zombieland I was compelled to write one. Once in a long while you come across a great zombie movie that tickles your fancy and Zombieland does just that.  Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg. They play the last few people who is alive in a devastated and destructed post apocalyptic  zombie world they once called Earth. The movie teeters on the line of seriousness and comedic fun. This is a zombie movie like no other that will you will enjoy from beginning to end.

Cloverfield

cloverfield

With its viral marketing in full force and several teaser trailers hitting the theaters since Summer Cloverfield is a must-see movie of the new year. The movie starts off with a message stating the following video as top-secret. The video follows a group of individuals during an attack on Manhattan by a mysterious giant monster. The film is shot in the style of a home-made camcorder, similar to the Blair-witch Project. If you’re easily susceptible to motion sickness then you might want to avoid this movie. The constant moving and shaking of the camera caused my eyes to get tired at times.

Cloverfield is moreso the name of the classified military project or incident of the attack on Manhattan than the name of anything particular. The movie builds up steadily, but gets nowhere with no actual climax. The story ends abruptly leaving you unsatisfied. I’m sure there is going to be a sequel or prequel seeing how this movie ended. Overall, Cloverfield is an interesting ‘monster’ movie. Actually, its more of a movie about humanity with a giant creature running around the city.

I Am Legend

iamlegend

After a genetic cure for cancer ends up destroying the humans it tried to cure Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, becomes the last survivor living in New York City. Neville’s only companion is a German Shepard name Sam. He spends each day gathering food and trying to find a cure. And at noon he waits out on the docks hoping if there are other survivors out there that have heard his distress radio call.

This movie is a one-man show with Smith, and he’s not only trying to survive in the post-apocolyptic world but trying to keep his insanity. Being alone is the least of his problems. The virus once engineered to cure cancer kills the majority of its victims, but turns the remaing victims to zombie/vampire like creatures that attacks at night. The atmosphere of the movie is unsettling and Smith playing the only character in the movie is on par with another great actor who played a similar role in Castaway, Tom Hanks.

The Golden Compass

goldencompass

Those comparing this movie as the next Lord of the Ring trilogy, Narnia, or even the Harry Potter series are out of their minds. There’s a laundry list of to things complain about this horrific movie. The story is convoluted with characters and events that made no significant impact on the story. This movie seems like a weak attempt at reproducing an epic movie such as the ones I listed above, but it fails miserably. The ending of the movie leaves you glad it ended, and seeing the second part of the movie is the last thing you want to do.

Hitman

hitman

I played the first Hitman game on PC and it was good, and the sequel was even better. The Hitman franchise span across many different console systems and now it’s a major motion picture. Timothy Olyphant wasn’t someone I can picture playing a an emotionless mercenary killer, Agent 47. But he’s able to pull it off quite well in this entertaining movie. Agent 47 is hired for a kill, but turns out he was being used for a cover-up. Now, 47 is on the run to find out the real truth and elude a CIA agent who has been tracking him and his assasination hits across the globe.

Beowulf

beowulf

This star-studded animated movie brings a unique cinematic experience to the big screen. The character animation resemlbes the actual actors extremely close. But where the eye-candy movie begins, it’s where the story of the film falls apart. Many of us read the epic poem of Beowulf and Grendal, but the translation of the story doesn’t carry well in this movie. The action scenes are exciting and entertaining, but the plot of the movie has more holes than a block of swiss cheese.

Superbad

Seth is rude, sarcastic, and self-loathing and Evan the quiet, shy and introverted nerd are high school seniors waddling in the lower end of the social ladder, concoct a plan to make their senior year as memorable as possible with one goal in mind, getting alcohol and getting laid. With the help of an equally nerdy buddy, Fogal, they go through with their plan, but everything goes awry from a botched liquor-buying attempted to a run-in with the police. From the minds of 40 Year old virgin and Knocked up this movie will keep you laughing with its self deprecating and politically incorrect humor.

The Borne Ultimatum

borneultimatum

This third film in the series is the best in terms of sheer action and suspense. Matt Damon is Jason Borne, a government trained assasin who is bent on revenge and to find out who he really is. Hunted by assassins Borne uncovers a covert government program that uses their unwavering power to do less-than ethical operations.

Unlike other trilogies, Ultimatum closes out it’s series solidly. On it’s own it’s a great action movie, and for those who followed the series they will appreciate some of its surprises and closure.

Transformers

transformers

When I first heard that Transformers will be a live-action movie I didn’t know what to expect. At first Steven Spielberg was planning to direct which got me excited as a school boy with a magnifying glass and an ant hill. And when I heard Michael Bay was directing it I had mixed feelings about it. Bay is known for making huge blockbuster movies that involves a lot of action coupled with explosions. The action is great, but the story and plot were cheeky. So I couldn’t imagine how they can take a great sci-fi story that fit so well as a cartoon and make it a live-action movie.

Bay has delivered a movie that provides a lot of action that’ll keep your eyes glued to the screen. The story was decent as the movie was running at a fast pace. There were many different characters in the movie that it made it difficult to have any real character development.

Transformers is a typical fun summer movie that doesn’t disappoint. There are already talks for a sequel. So check it out while it’s still in the theaters.
