UFC 156

Im a huge Frankie Edgar fan and this Championship fight is going to be exciting.

Jose Aldo is the king of the division, but he hasn’t faced anyone that is well rounded as Edgar. I actually see Edgar getting the win via decision.

My picks:

Frankie Edgar beats Jose Aldo
Rasad Evans beats Antonio Rogerio Noguiera
Alistair Overeem beats Antonio Silva
Jon Fitch beats Demian Maia
Joseph Benavidez beats Ian Mccall
Jacob Volkmann beats Bobby Green
Evan Dunham beats Gleison Tibau

Cain Velasquez is one of the most dynamic Heavyweights in the division. His quickness and endurance has made him very successful. But those  traits were mostly due to his smaller stature as a heavyweight.  What has made Dos Santos the champ he is today is his quick feet and his heavy hands. When these two meet again tonight the major difference between the two are their skillset they bring into the game; Velasquez with his wrestling, Dos Santos and his striking.

Velasquez’s last fight against Dos Santos ended too quickly to see his both of their game plans. But I see fight ending very similar as it did before.  Velasquez will have a hard time dealing with Dos Santos heavy and quick hands.  But if there was any chance for Velasquez to pull out a win he will need to turn this fight into a wrestling match.  Velasquez needs to take the Champ to the ground or stuff him against the cage.

My Picks:

Junior Dos Santos beats Cain Velasquez
Jim Miller beats Joe Lauzon
Tim Boetsch beats Constantinos Philippou
Yushin Okami beats Alan Belcher
Chris Leben beats Derek Brunson
Eddie Wineland beats Brad Pickett
Melvin Guillard beats Jamie Varner
Michael Johnson beats Miles Jury
Byron Bloodworth beats Erik Perez

Twilight – Breaking Dawn Part 2

The last and final chapter in the Twilight film saga ends with Breaking Dawn part 2. I’ve never read any of the books and I only watched the movies to see what all the buzz was about. The first two movies were interesting and actually had a good plot, but the movies following it seems to have ditched a solid story line and actual acting.

Break Dawn part 2 unites many of the vampire friends and werewolves of the Cullen family to protect Bella and her new child from the Volturi (a powerful coven of vampires that enforces the laws in the vampire world), And in this vampire world having an immortal child is in violation of their laws. I think it’s ironic how the character played by Dakota Fanning looks barely older than Bella’s daughter.

Anyhow, like the previous movies Breaking Dawn part 2 is just as corny and filled with bad acting. Unless you’ve seen the previous 4 movies there shouldn’t be any reason to go out to catch this movie.

UFC 154

GSP has been out for more than 18 months since his last fight against Jake Shields. St. Pierre will be defending his title against current Interim champ Carlos Condit. This will be a very interesting match. Condit will be one of GSP’s more well rounded opponents to date. However, Condit isn’t going to bring what GSP hasn’t already faced.

Condit’s last fight against Nick Diaz showed that he is a very cerebral fighter. He executed his game plan perfectly and didn’t fall into Diaz’s antics, which have gotten many other fighters flustered. Condit has a great chance to shock MMA fans and win the title. What he needs to do to win is to immediately go after GSP at the opening round. Condit needs to put on the pressure, but stay away from the takedowns. GSP tends to spend the first couple of minutes sizing up his opponents before he pulls the trigger. Since GSP has been out for some time, Condit will need to take advantage of GSP’s ring rust. The early pressure from Condit will keep GSP at bay.

One of the biggest questions people have for the current champ is how he will perform coming back from a serious injury, and will he still be able to dominate the division? A true champ will always come to win and GSP has more than enough tools to maintain the title for some time. Condit will be a tough test for the champ, but GSP will prove too much for the challenger once the champ gets into his grove.

My Picks:

Georges St. Pierre beats Carlos Condit
Martin Kampmann beats Johny Hendricks
Francis Carmont beats Tom Lawlor
Nick Ring beats Costa Philippou (fight cancelled)
Rafael dos Anjos beats Mark Bocek
Mark Hominick beats Pablo Garza
Patrick Cote beats Alessio Sakara
Chad Riggs beats Cyrille Diabate
Sam Stout beats John Makdessi
Rodrigo Damm beats Antonio Carvalho

Galaxy Note 2 Review

When you first hold the Galaxy Note 2 in your hand the first thing that comes mind is, “holy cow, this thing is huge.”  Samsung’s super sized phone is somewhat a cross between a large phone and a small tablet. When the phone was first announced I knew I was going to get it.  I currently use a Blackberry 9900, iPhone 4s, and an iPad 3 for various activities such as games, taking pictures/videos, web browsing, and email/texting.  The Galaxy Note 2 was going to consolidate at least two of those devices if not all of them.

Last Friday I came into a crowded AT&T store looking to pick up the phone. It seems that the Nokia Lumia 920 was also being released the same day. Both phones were very popular by the time I got mine there were only a couple of Notes left and most of the variants of the Lumia 920s were sold out.

Setting up the brand new phone was easy. If you already have a Google account then signing in with it will sync all your contacts and emails.  For those coming from an Android device they will feel right at home.  The Note 2 comes with the latest Android OS, Jelly Bean 4.1.1, so you know you’ll be running the latest and greatest OS when you buy it (at least until the Jelly Bean 4.2 comes with the Nexus 4).

When it comes to hardware specs the Galaxy Note 2 is the best phone in the market today. The phone is incredibly fast, the battery life is amazing, the camera takes amazing videos and photos, and the screen is bright and vivid. But with all those awesome specs the phone wasn’t for me.  As it turns out size does matter. With my Blackberry or  iPhone I can operate it easily with one hand, but with the Note 2 it can be very cumbersome. As a father with a new born its difficult to use the Note 2 to take pictures or videos of my son.  I find my self fumbling with the phone when I quickly need it. Keep in mind this is when you’re operating it with one hand. But with two hands the phone is great and easily manageable.

The large screen of the Note 2 is its greatest strength and its weakness. The Note 2 isn’t for everyone. Like me, I thought it was, but after using it I realized that having a physical keyboard and operating it with one hand when needed was much more important than having lots of apps and a large screen.  So depending on your lifestyle or your typical smartphone use the Note 2 might or might not be the best phone you can get.

One of the additional features the Note 2 has is the stylus which Samsung calls the S Pen.  Samsung has its own apps that utilize the stylus functionality.  Personally, the S Pen is more of an added bonus to the Note 2. I find it difficult to see how I could use it often, so more power to those who can find the S Pen as a daily use app.

Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆

Pros:
Amazing battery life
Camera takes great pictures and videos
Large beautiful screen
Runs the latest Android OS, at least until the Nexus 4 comes out next week

Cons:
Cumbersome one-hand use
Very expensive ($299 with two year contract)

Skyfall

Daniel Craig reprises his role as the British secret spy agent in Skyfall.  In Skyfall Bond is presumed dead after being shot while recovering a stolen hard drive containing the identities of other operatives spying in terrorist organizations.  After living his life in hiding  Bond returns when he finds that out his employer, MI6, has been bombed.  Soon it is known that the bombing wasn’t a terrorist attack, but an attack on M, the head of MI6. Bond now must find track the suspects down before they kill M.

Unlike many of the previous Bond movies you won’t see any awesome spy gadgets or spy cars. This film focuses on Bond’s past and his relationship with M. This is a worthy film of the franchise but not Daniel Craig’s best. That goes to Casino Royale.

UFC 153

I’ve talked to some fiends and many of them have already written Bonnar off on this fight. Anderson Silva is the clear favorite, but in MMA everyone has a chance.  Unlike most Anderson’s previous opponents Bonnar has the slight weight and size advantage.  I believe Bonnar’s only chance is to take the fight to the ground.  Bonnar’s BJJ is underrated and he can surprise the Middleweight champ and the world if he can slip in a submission early in the fight.  But that’s easier said than done.  I expect Anderson Silva to keep the fight standing and knocking out the former TUF competitor.

My Picks:

Anderson Silva beats Stephan Bonnar
Dave Herman beats Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Glover Teixeira beats Fabio Maldonado
Erick Silva beats Jon Fitch
Phil Davis beats Wagner Prado
Rick Story beats Demian Maia
Gleison Tibau beats Francisco Trinaldo
Diego Brando beats Joey Gambino
Luis Cane beats Chris Camozzi

UFC 152

Vitor Belfort was once the most feared fighter in the early days of UFC. His speed and strength was almost unmatched inside the cage.  Over the years Belfort went from top of the heap to middle of the pack. But with a couple of high profile wins and a little bit of luck the Brazilian gets a shot at the Light heavyweight title.

Belfort has been fighting at Middleweight for the past few years and how he’s stepping in the cage against one of the most dominant   Light Heavyweight fighters in UFC. Jon Jones has already put away four former UFC Champs with ease. It will be difficult for Belfort to put up an effective strategy that Jones hasn’t already seen.  If there’s any chance that Belfort can pull off an upset he’ll need to pressure Jones from the opening bell. He’ll need to use his speed to close the distance and press the champ up against the cage.  Beflort is a great fighter, but in the end Jones will finish the fight before it reaches the championship rounds.

My Picks:

Jon Jones Beats Vitor Belfort
Demetrious Johnson beats Joseph Benavidez
Michael Bisping beats Brian Stann
Matt Hamill beats Roger Hollett
Charles Oliveira beats Cub Swanson
Igor Pokrajac beats Vinny Magalhaes
Evan Dunham beats TJ Grant
Sean Pierson beats Lance Benoist
Charlie Brenneman beats Kyle Noke
