Thoughts on the Windows 8 Developer Preview

When the Windows 8 Developer Preview was available for download I immediately jumped on it.  I downloaded it and installed it as a virtual machine.  The install process is very similar to installing Windows 7, but the initial Windows 8 set up is very new. You answer a few questions about your network connection and whether or not you’d like to log in with your Windows Live account or create a local account.

It’s the Start screen that’ll blow you away. Microsoft has made some bold changes. First off, they carried over the Windows Phone tiles over to their Windows OS.  This new interface is definitely tailored towards the tablet form factor. Since I was running it as a virtual machine on my laptop I wasn’t unable to test any of it’s touch features. But from the looks of it I’m sure it’s as smooth and responsive as its Windows Phone OS.  Applications are launched by the selecting the tiles on the screen. Some tiles can display live data such as Stock info and the current weather.  There is also a tile to launch the classic Windows desktop as we’ve all come to know.  Microsoft has not departed from the standard desktop GUI, It’s still there and it still looks the same as Windows 7.  Microsoft is moving away from it’s traditional OS layout to a more consumer friendly interface.  In essence, Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a heavy tablet overlay, and this is a big step into getting their OS onto more tablets.  But unlike other tablets, you’ll actually be getting a full functional desktop experience when you need it.

For me, a tablet computers aren’t useful unless it can do everything a typical desktop/laptop computer can do. Up until now, the Windows OS was not optimized for tablets. The user interface wasn’t made for touch screens, the OS was bloated with code to support legacy devices and software, and the hardware that required to run it were power hungry.  Now with Windows 8 many of those issues will be a thing of the past.  And so far with what I’ve seen with this Windows 8 preview I’m very excited to see how Windows 8 progress.

Check out a few of the screen shots below. If you want to check out Windows 8 Developer Preview for yourself you can download it HERE.

Contagion

A mysterious virus spreads across the globe killing its victims within days. There is no cure or vaccine in sight and society begins to break down.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, he brings this visceral drama of a deadly outbreak and makes it as real and plausible for us to believe. Unfortunately, this documentary style film lacks suspense and any meaningful character development.

The Change-Up

This raunchy comedy staring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds is about two best friends who’s lives are different in every way and end up switching places with each other. Ironically, they end up learning more about themselves than each other.

Bateman plays Dave Lockwood, a family man and hot shot lawyer whose life is consumed by his work and children leaving him to neglect his wife and their relationship. Reynolds plays Mitch Planko, a reckless playboy who’s lack of ambition gets him nowhere in life. When the two magically switch places, confusion and hilarity ensue. In Dave’s body, Mitch must prove to himself that he’s no quitter. With Mitch’s body, Dave takes the opportunity to do all the things he missed out on while chasing his career.  Overall, this movie may not be the funniest movie of the year, or even the summer, but it’s entertaining and it will definitely give you a few laughs.

UFC 134 – Rio

For the second time the raining Middleweight champ, Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva, will be facing the Japanese sensation, Yushin Okami. The last time they faced each other the fight ended in an awkward win for Okami, via disqualification by Anderson Silva.  Nevertheless Okami is the last person to hold a win over The Spider. This fight has been a long time coming. Okami has put on some great fights as well as a couple of disappointing losses, but with each loss Okami came back more determined and has proved himself  to be a worthy contender to the title.

Tomorrow night will be a special night for UFC and the Brazilian fans. It’s been over a decade since Brazil held a UFC event. Many of the popular UFC Brazilian fighters will be representing their country in the Octagon. Most importantly the Middleweight title is on the line. Watch Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera fight for the first time in his home country against rising star, Brendan Schaub. Shogun Rua is back in the octagon.  This time it will be a rematch against TUF winner and former Light Heavyweight champ, Forrest Griffin and the fighter that beat Rua in his UFC debut.

My Picks:

Luis Cane beats Stanislav Nedkov
Rousimar Palhares beats Dan Miller
Ross Pearson beats Edson Barboza
Forrest Griffin beats Mauricio Rua
Paulo Thiago beats David Mitchell
Thiago Tavares beats Spencer Fisher
Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera beats Brendan Shaub
Anderson Silva beats Yushin Okami

Blackberry Bold 9900 Review

It’s been a very long wait, but RIM has finally released the Blackberry many of us fans have been dying for. The new Blackberry Bold 9900 sports a large (9000-sized) keyboard with a touch screen in addition to an revamped OS and a powerful 1.2ghz cpu. Does it live up to the hype, and will this phone help RIM be competitive against the onslaught of Apple and Google’s Android?

Design:

The first thing you’ll notice about this new Bold is how thin it is. At around 10mm It’s the thinnest Blackberry to date. The phone is solid in your hands. It’s balanced and weighs just right; not too heavy and not too light that makes it feel like a piece of plastic. The stainless steel band that surrounds the device gives it that iPhone 4 look, which is a great look. The designers of the phone really took this phone to the next level. As a phone junkie that has rocked quite a few smartphones this new Bold design is on par, if not, better than the best phones on the market right now.

I couldn’t imagine RIM releasing a device with a better keyboard than the 9000. But to my surprise they some how pulled it off. The keyboard on the 9900 is amazing. It’s difficult to put into words how awesome it is. If RIM strictly just sold the 9900 keyboards as a bluetooth mobile keyboard it would probably sell better than most smartphones on the market.

Touch Screen:

This is also the first time RIM has released a keyboard and touch device in a candybar form factor. The 2.8 in screen is bright and vibrant and the touch features are fantastic. The touch operation on the phone is fast, responsive, and accurate. Navigating through the phone or surfing the web browser is a breeze and amazingly fast. It didn’t take me too long to get use to this new touch screen, but once you get use to it it’s difficult to go back to a non-touch Bold.

Software:

The Bold 9900 comes with RIM’s OS7. Its an update to last years OS6. To the untrained eye one would not see too many differences. It is true, visually OS7 is not much different from its predecessor. The entire system is way much faster and smooth, but all of this can be contributed to its blazing fast 1.2ghz processor. Most of the major changes where done under the hood. For example, what makes OS7 smooth is that RIM has manage to bake in GPU acceleration which they named it ‘Liquid Graphics’. Switching apps and going between screens appears to be instant. Overall, it may feel like a brand new OS compared to OS6. A good analogy of OS7 is that it is RIMs Windows 7, and OS6 was its Vista. Those who have used the previous OS will feel quite at home with this version, and the vast speed improvement is always welcomed.

Apps:

If there’s one thing about the Blackberry platform is its lack of apps. The entire architecture is built from an aging Java based platform that was never intended to run high quality apps you see on the iPhone and Android phones.

I don’t use many apps on my Blackberry, but the ones I do use are great. Flixster, Twitter, Facebook, WordPress, and Foursquare is just as good as any of it’s counterparts on other platforms. In the end if you’re looking for a library of quality apps and games Blackberrys in general just doesn’t have it, and the 9900 and OS7 is not an exception.

*note:  if you’re coming from OS6 not all of your previous apps will be compatible with OS7. You’ll have to wait for the devs to make them compatible.*

Battery Life:

Blackberry phones are known for their superb battery life. The 9900 comes with a slightly smaller battery than its predecessor (9000/9700/9780). With a higher resolution screen and a more powerful processor I was worried that RIM would have a difficult time maintaining the same level of battery life and efficiency. I’m currently using .317 of OS7 and my experience with the battery life have been somewhat positive, but by comparison it is not as impressive as my previous Blackberry 9780. The 9900 can easily last a whole work day, whereas my old phone would last about a day and a half. Given that it’s a smaller battery running on a much more powerful device it’s not too bad.

I don’t have any hard numbers, but if I compared it with my iPhone 4 I think the 9900 would outlast it by a couple of hours with similar usage. But if you’re like me who came from a 9700 or 9780 don’t expect it to have the same battery life.

Overall Experience:

This is the best Blackberry ever made. Period. The keyboard is the best for any mobile device on the market today. The Blackberry phone is all about communicating. Whether it’s texting/MMS, emailing, or making phone calls this phone does it better than anything right now. Apps on the other hand is a bit of a let down. Unfortunately, RIM won’t be able to do anything about it until they roll out their QNX phones in the near future.

In the mean time the 9900 is a great device for the existing Blackberry user or anyone looking for a phone with an awesome physical keyboard.  Those who have defected to other devices because of it’s previous shortcoming should take a serious second look. You’ll be surprised. The new design and updated OS is a huge step forward for RIM and it’s in a direction that will not disappoint.

Rating: ★★★★★★★★½☆

Pros:

Amazing Keyboard
Fast and Smooth UI
Solid build quality and form factor
Responsive touch screen
Fast Browser

Cons:

Slightly above average battery
Lack of great apps
Expensive
QNX is right around the corner

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This is a prequel to the 1968 and 2001 movie “Planet of the Apes” starring Charlton Heston and Mark Wahlberg respectively.  In this film Will Rodman, played by James Franco, is searching for a cure of Alzheimer by genetically engineering a virus and testing them on chimpanzees.  The outcome lead to a short term cure which he had to modify to make it more potent.  The new potent cure dramatically increases the intelligence of the chimps but causes unwarranted side effects on humans.

This movie is a surprisingly entertaining with a great story line. It’s definitely one of the top movies of the summer. When it comes to prequels Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of the best.

UFC 133

Last time I saw Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz fight it was at the Arco Arena in Sacramento at UFC 73. The fight unfortunately ended in a draw. Since the fight Rashad Evans has put a string of wins and eventually captured the Light Heavyweight title. Ortiz hasn’t had much luck. With plaguing injury and poor performances many are surprised he’s still fighting. But his last fight against Ryan Bader proved that he still got some fight left in him.

Evans is still in the midst of a burgeoning career whereas Ortiz is winding his down for retirement. Evans is very much like Tito in his style and strength and in this fight Ortiz will have a very difficult time battling his younger foe.

My Picks:

Rashad Evans beats Tito Ortiz
Vitor Belfort beats Yoshihiro Akiyama
Brian Ebersole beats Dennis Hallman
Costantinos Philippou beats Jorge Rivera
Rory MacDonald beats Mike Pyle
Alexander Gustafsson beats Matt Hamill
Chad Mendes beats Rani Yahya
Mike Pierce beats Johny Hendricks
Mike Brown beats Nam Pham

Captain America

One of the most iconic Marvel Super Heroes has finally made it to the silver screen. Captain America, the future leader of the Avengers, battles Red Skull and a boatload of Nazis.

Fans of Captain America will love this movie, but what makes this movie standout compared to the other Marvel movies is that this film really focused on the character development of Steve Rogers. It’s not his super soldier powers that makes him such a likable guy, but it’s his unwavering integrity and loyalty to his country and friends.

If I had to fault this movie it would be that the second half of the film is not has solid as the first. Overall, this movie is fun and exciting and makes the upcoming Avenger movie more compelling.

Rating: ★★★★★★★½☆☆

Horrible Bosses

Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, and Jason Sudeikis play three average guys whose life is made miserable because of their bosses. One drunken night the guys come up with an idea to free themselves from their sadistic employer; kill their bosses. It turns out how no matter how well planned their scheme were their life only got worse.

This movie is a refreshing summer comedy that will keep you laughing from beginning to end.

Lenovo Thinkpad W520 Review

I’ve been using Thinkpads since since the T32 model was released. And since then I have owned a T41p, T60, T61p, R61, and now the W520.  Before getting the W520 I was looking for a powerful laptop to consolidate my old desktop and laptop. So I had to find one that was not only powerful but it had to be portable as well. After several weeks of reading reviews and hands-on demoing I pulled the trigger picked up the W520.

My W520 Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2720QM 2.2Ghz
Video: Nvidia Quadro 2000m 2GB DDR3
Screen: 15.6 FHD (1920 x 1080) LED
Memory: 16GB 10600 DDR3
Storage: 320 GB 7200
Weight: 5.75 lbs

Anyone who is familiar with the Thinkpad brand knows that it’s all about business, but in my opinion the matte black and minimalist design is pretty sexy and a joy to use. But underneath all that no nonsense facade is some serious hardware. With the new Core i7 processor and the Nvidia Quadro 2000m it is a CAD and photo-video editor’s dream machine. Editing pictures on Photoshop and HD videos on Adobe Premiere CS5.5 was effortless. If you’re into encoding videos I ran a VOB to MP4 file in High Profile on Handbrake and the W520 churned it out like nobody’s business at well over 100fps.  If you’re into gaming the Quadro 2000m is more than enough to handle your most demanding games. Keep in mind the Quadro card is optimize for CAD and application that can take advantage of Nvidia’s CUDA.  I ran GRID at max resolution and settings without any hiccups. I don’t play video games much but if this Thinkpad can run that game silky smooth I’m sure it’ll handle whatever you throw at it.

With all that hardware one would think the battery life is abysmal, but it’s quite the opposite. Since the W520 utilizes Nvidia’s Optimus technology the system will switch between the integrated and discrete graphics. This seriously saves battery life. With my experience I was able to squeeze out a little over 7 and a half hours with web browsing, YouTubing, and RDPing before the system hit 5% battery life. The W520 will use the integrated graphics until you use an application that requires the additional horsepower of the discrete graphics. You also get the option to have the application choose which graphics card.  In addition, there’s a BIOS setting that will force the use of either graphics card exclusively.  Either way you get plenty of choices on how you use it.

As an IT Admin I spec’d out my Thinkpad with 16GB of RAM.  Being able to virtually run a small Active Directory domain environment with a database server is invaluable. This Thinkpad can hold up to four RAM modules; two on the bottom of the system and two right underneath the keyboard. If you want, the system can go up to 32GB of RAM if you’re willing to dish out that kind of cash.

With over a week of use on this system I’m convince that the W520 is the best all-around laptop to date. Anyone looking for a powerful mobile workstation with great battery life then look no further. The W520 is the machine for you.

 Pros:

Amazing Thinkpad Keyboard
Decent battery life
Very Powerful
Vibrant screen
Competitive Price
Cons:

Giant power adapter
No option for Blue-ray drive
No Ultrabay battery option
Pre-installed bloatware
